Beach at Yap island, Micronesia

Несмотря на то что Яп является "высоким" вулканическим остовом на нем есть неплохие пляжи. Они особенно хороши тем что как везде в Микронезии местное население достаточно консервативно и не спешит настроить кучу курортов на своих берегах. Эти пляжи сохраняют первозданный, дикий вид. Вся земля на Япе частная, и разные части побережья принадлежат разным племенам. Для того чтобы попасть на эти пляжи необходимо иметь гида, который знает местных вождей и может получить от них разрешение на посещение - в противном случае находиться там запрещено.

Но как и в случае с другими архипелагами лучшие пляжи на Япе находятся на Внешних островах -маленьких коралловых образованиях разбросанных на достаточно большом удалении от главного острова.

Despite the fact that Yap is high volcanic island it does have beautiful sandy beaches. That makes them really nice is that like everywhere in Micronesia local people are very conservative, and are not in hurry to build many beach resorts like in other parts of the world - this beaches still retain virgin, untouched feeling. All land in Yap is private, and different portions of coastline belong to different tribes. You will need to have guide who knows local chefs and can get permission to get to these beaches - otherwise it is prohibited to be there ;)

But best beaches in Yap as like everythere else are outside - on Outer Islands, small reef islets around big island, pretty far from it in fact.

I watched Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World for the first time recently, and I was taken aback by how delightfully excellent it is. I found myself rewinding scenes to watch them again and asking myself, "How did I miss this film?" and "Why didn't I watch it sooner?" I had to return the DVD to a friend, but I already want to watch it again. It's 84% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.5 on IMDb (could be higher), and Roger Ebert gave it four stars. I understand that naval adventures during the Napoleonic War aren't exactly a broad interest, and there already are so few of them due to their expensive and difficult production, but maybe if it had come out a year after the first Pirates of the Caribbean instead of a few months, it would have fared better. (Unlikely, though.)

Patrick O'Brian's story is already superb, but it's brought to life so perfectly by Russell Crowe and especially Paul Bettany, Peter Weir (who needs to do a sequel immediately), and a smart screenplay. It was nominated for a bunch of Academy Awards, but it, like everything else that year, was killed by LOTR: ROTK (another film I'm a fan), but thank goodness MaC won Best Cinematography. I was completely sucked in by this film from the start.

It makes me wonder what other hidden gems I've overlooked (recently or otherwise)...

В дополнение к (почти) стабильным встречам с мантами и потрясающему акульему дайву на точке Vertigo на Япе так-же есть неплохие возможности для макро-фотографии. Точка Slow&Easyв отличие от удаленных сайтов с мантами и акулам находится буквально перед отелем и дайв-шопом, добраться до нее занимает минуты три. Обычно Yap Divers предлагают третий и четвертый дайв в этом и нескольких других похожих местах. Количество голожаберных моллюсков там очень велико, найти их не представляет никаких трудностей, и видовое разнообразие тоже неплохое. В майскую поездку на Яп я с удовольствием погружался там почти каждый день.

А теперь хорошая новость, правда уже не очень новая - в третьем, июньском номере за этот год ведущий российский журнал о дайвинге "Октопус" напечатал мое портфолио и интервью, на целых пять цветных разворотов ! ;) Как говориться - спрашивайте в киосках СоюзПечати ;)

In addition to semi-stable manta encounters and fantastic shark dive at Vertigo Yap island also fares surprisingly good for Micronesia in terms of macro photography. In particular, Slow&Easy point. Unlike sharks and mantas points which require relatively long trip on the boat this point is next to Yap Divers shop, just 3-4 minutes trip. Usually Yap Divers offer third and fourth dive of the day at this point. Population of nudibranch is very impressive, they are just everywhere, and diversity is ok too. I really enjoyed diving almost every day at that point on my trip to Yap in May.

And now good news - not very new though - this year's third issue of leading Russian dive-magazine "Octopus" features my portfolio and interview, all on 10 colorful pages ! I'm not sure if you can buy "Octopus" abroad, but in Russia it is very popular in diving community, and it is big honor for me to be there ! Thank you. "Octopus" ! ;)

While in Sea World San Diego today, my family and I watched the Shamu Rocks! special, with an original song titled "This is Where the Future Lives!" My brother and I, being the msties that we are, happily sang along and changed the words to "This is where the fish lives," which we figured was appropriate, you know, because it was Sea World.

Leave it to my mother to plan our summer vacation to San Diego over Comic Con weekend, only to NOT go to Comic Con.

These are two movies (that are not out yet) that are billing themselves as a "cult classic" before even hitting theaters (I place money they will both be box office failures).

i never realized how many people really loved mst3k...i'm so glad i've found awesome mst3k fans :) 

Judging from the ranting I've seen on LJ tonight, it would appear that the Sci Fi channel, in its oh so infinite wisdom, has totally botched the Doctor Who season finale by revealing a MAJOR plot point in the trailer for the final episode. With this being Sci Fi, I won't say I'm at all surprised. They pulled the same stunt last year with Stargate Atlantis during a preview for an upcoming episode:

VOICEOVER: "You won't believe what happens in the last five minutes!"

And then? They SHOW YOU what happens in the last five minutes of the next episode.

Whoever does the editing for Sci Fi seriously needs to be drawn and quartered.

The 4-minute Star Wars: The Clone Wars clip that was shown at the San Diego Comic-Con on Friday is now online. Opening August 15, the Warner Bros. and Lucasfilm release was directed by David Filoni from a script by Henry Gilroy, Steven Melching and Scott Murphy.
