whilst there's nothing particularly earth shattering in my Friends-Only entries, i do occasionally talk about my personal life which i would prefer to keep private.

comment to be added and if i feel that you're not a complete twat then i'll add you. you might regret it as my LJ really isn't that profound, honestly.

America's greatest innovators
Some of America's greatest innovators were thought of as pirates.

When Thomas Edison invented the phonographic record player, musicians branded him a pirate out to steal their work and destroy the live music business, until a system was established so everyone could be paid royalties, which we today call the record industry.

Edison, in turn, went on to invent filmmaking, and demanded a licensing fee from those making movies with his technology. This caused a band of filmmaking pirates, including a man named William, to flee New York for the then still wild West, where they thrived, unlicensed, until Edison's patents expired.

These pirates continue to operate there, albeit legally now, in the town they founded: Hollywood. William's last name? Fox.

trees
if a tree falls in a forest does it make a noise? what about if zero tress fall in the forest, will anyone notice that?

bear that in mind when people on LJ are on strike this coming Friday. the theory being that as many people as possible create NO new posts. This week's LJ owners are Russians (SUP) who incidentally have a proud history of free expression and defending human rights and the general welfare of their citizens. Remember all those athletes and musicians desperate to escape to the west and let us all know how great it was over there during the Cold War? That was the bit before that marvel of modern architecture The Berlin Wall came down. Anyway the new owners have been effectively imposing censorship in various forms ranging from filtering searches to banning sexually explicit fancic comms all over LJ along with the sneaky removal of free accounts for reasons too unknown to fathom. People are not happy, bloggers are not happy and so a keyboards-down has been called and erm, pencilled in.

The Russian owners have probably got better things to do than what LJ users are NOT doing. imagine if everyone on LJ constantly blogged for a 24 hour period and overwhelmed their serves with content and traffic instead of no content and no traffic. a radical thought would suggest that they would notice that a lot quicker than a no-keyboards campaign.
who exactly is supposed to notice this strike? its like a reverse denial of service attack.
